Well Walking Dead fans, tonight is a somber and emotional night for us all. WARNING: Minor spoilers, but we won’t spoil the important stuff if you haven’t seen the episode yet.
The developers of The Walking Dead are crafty one’s with their little snippet of teaser’s for this episode; I mean we at RewindSTL were thoroughly misguided by their promotional teasers. We thought Daryl was the one to go, but it wasn’t (but we’re not going to tell you his fate if you haven’t seen the episode).
This episode, appropriately titled “The Day Will Come When You Won’t”, which are words from Dr. Jenner to Rick in Season 1’s finale, is an emotional roller coaster. We see Negan’s true psychopathic ways and how he really works and treats people; Jeffrey Dean Morgan is the best choice to portray Negan. We don’t think anyone else could bring out Negan’s true psychopathic personality in such a fashion. And this was just the first episode!
At first we were getting a little impatient because we wanted to know who died; it took two commercial breaks for us to finally see Rick thinking back on what just happened and finally see who got to “meet Lucille”. We can honestly say that it wasn’t the direction, at first, we thought it would go. But, and we’ll just say this but you avid comic readers may already know though, that their character was due to die as they had lived past their lifespan in the comics but were still alive in the TV series, so we knew their number was due, just like Carol too as she died during the group’s stint in the prison when they were going up against The Governor.
But there was still shock value to come; and we’ll just say this as well, a second member does die. But this is thanks to Daryl being the billy badass that he is and sucker punching Negan. So, being a man of word as he had said in Season 6’s finale, Negan nonchalantly kills a second member with Lucille, with much delight we might add.
However the death’s of the two group members are inter-cut throughout the episode as Negan and Rick take a stroll down the road; but this isn’t really bonding by no means. This is basically Negan beginning to show his control and power over Rick and how helpless Rick really is. Negan is essentially mindf***ing Rick in every which way. It really is a somber moment to watch as we have seen Rick in control and be the leader for most of every season so far. So to watch this scene happening in front of us just show’s what type of direction the show is already going and how much change is about to occur.
The entire episode is about how powerless Rick is going to become and to really introduce us to Negan and who he is. We only got a snippet of him in Season 6’s finale so this episode was basically all about him and Rick, getting to know one another and to essentially pull all of Rick’s power and authority away. Yeah we all wanted to see who died, but that wasn’t the basis and plot of the episode, just the shock value. However the scene with Carl toward the end of the episode had us at the edge of our seats wondering if what we saw was going to happen; but we won’t spoil it for you so you can watch it for yourself.
Season 7 has officially kicked off and from what we have seen already, it is going to be one helluva ride and thrill to see what’s next. If you want to comment below and talk about the episode go for it; we’ll be watching the comment’s section so we can interact with the fans!
