Well here we are tonight with another episode of The Walking Dead’s newest season under our belts, and after last week’s season premiere I can honestly say that we needed this episode’s more mellow, low key tone. I mean hell, we finally get to see Shiva, King Ezekiel’s pet tiger! This is something that I have been waiting for a while. But for those that do not read the comics and are somewhat lost and asking questions then fear not, as we here at RewindSTL will fill in the blanks for you.
WARNING: There are spoilers in the following review so read at your own risk.
In the second episode of The Walking Dead’s Season 7, titled ‘The Well’, we pick up where we left Morgan and Carol at in Season 6, who are transported to The Kingdom so Carol can get the proper medical attention after being shot by a lone Savior. Here we see a very productive and vibrant community led by the charismatic leader and founder, King Ezekiel, who is protected by Shiva, his loyal pet tiger (and probably the most awesome thing to be added to The Walking Dead to date). Once Carol meet’s Ezekiel she immediately forms a front, secretly hating this new community she is introduced to as it is ‘just a fairy tale’ fronted to the people that live there. In this episode we are introduced to yet another community’s view of the ‘new world’ and the accomplishments, troubles and secret dealings it participates in, mainly with the Saviors as it is shown that The Kingdom is already supplying Negan’s forces with supplies, and perhaps have been doing so for some time.
This is perhaps one of the more pivotal episodes that will air in the first half of Season 7, mainly due to the fact that The Kingdom plays a very important role in the inevitable bloody war that will occur between Negan and Rick. The episode was mainly about introducing the titular character King Ezekiel and his pet tiger Shiva, who plays a pivotal role as well in the comics and actually participates in some major battles against the Saviors. The Kingdom is actually stronger than initially portrayed in tonight’s episode; however there is one variable that still baffles us: Ezekiel and Carol.
Throughout the episode we have Ezekiel trying to win Carol over with his overly polite hospitality and charisma; however seeing that this is not working, seeing through his visage and knowing that Carol will eventually want to leave, Ezekiel finally confronts her toward the end of the episode and reveals who he really is that no one else knows: he is a former zookeeper that won over the trust and love of a tiger cub who became inseparable from him and thus boosting his ‘title’ among those he interacted with until he was able to create The Kingdom. However Carol does not care and still leaves; yet at the very end of the episode Ezekiel and Shiva still find her held up in an abandoned house, offering her a piece of fruit. So what does this mean? Why is Ezekiel trying so hard to win Carol over? For those that have read the comics, Carol on the television adaptation is on borrowed time as her character in the comics commits suicide during the war against The Governor. Her character is the longest to still be alive after her comic counterpart has already died.
Well folks, only time will tell how this season will unfold; stay tuned for more episode reviews!
