How Jimmy Buffet Was Cast To Jurassic World

  • by

Universal Studios in Orlando holds a special place in the hearts of many Floridians. Growing up, weekend trips to the park were a staple, and the 1999 opening of Universal CityWalk was a game-changer.

CityWalk offered a wider variety of dining options compared to traditional theme park fare, even if it meant familiar chain restaurants. Among these new establishments was Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, a restaurant that quickly became a fixture in the Universal experience.

Margaritaville perfectly captured the spirit of a carefree vacation, blending kitsch with tropical themes to create a fun atmosphere. Its presence within the park felt natural, a perfect complement to the thrill rides and fantastical worlds found just beyond the restaurant’s doors.

While the 2015 film Jurassic World may have had its flaws, its inclusion of Margaritaville wasn’t one of them. The movie cleverly connected the fictional dinosaur park to its real-world counterpart, and even featured a hilarious cameo by Jimmy Buffett himself.

The Margaritaville Mystery in Jurassic World

The use of popular brands in Jurassic World has sparked debate. While some see it as blatant product placement, others argue it accurately depicts a modern theme park experience. This was precisely the approach taken by director Colin Trevorrow and producer Frank Marshall, as revealed in a behind-the-scenes featurette. Their vision for Jurassic World‘s shopping and dining area mirrored the real-life CityWalk concept, complete with familiar brands.

Topping their list was Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville. Given Universal’s connection to the restaurant chain, its inclusion felt natural. To add another layer of fun, they approached Buffett himself to portray a bartender in the film’s Margaritaville.

Buffett’s enthusiastic response cemented the plan. His brief cameo as a margarita-clutching patron fleeing from dinosaurs became an instant fan favorite. The scene cleverly blended the fictional world with the real one, reminding viewers of the connection between Jurassic World and Universal Studios. This subtle marketing tactic, woven into the film’s narrative, further blurred the lines between fantasy and reality, adding a layer of authenticity to the park’s portrayal.

More Than Just a Brand Placement

The inclusion of Margaritaville in Jurassic World wasn’t just a product placement deal. Producer Frank Marshall and Buffett boasted a long-standing friendship of over 40 years before Buffett’s passing. This preexisting bond likely smoothed the way for Margaritaville’s appearance in the film. In fact, the two had collaborated more recently on the Broadway musical Escape to Margaritaville and the documentary Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story.

Beyond the brand synergy, Marshall’s involvement adds a heartwarming layer to the cameo. It wasn’t just about a product placement; it was a chance for two longtime friends to have some fun. Considering they were both in their late 60s at the time, who could deny them that opportunity? The collaboration not only enriched the film but also served as a testament to their enduring friendship.

Buffett’s involvement extended beyond the film itself. He even provided the soundtrack for the Jurassic World premiere party.  His presence, both on screen and off, served as a delightful addition to the entire Jurassic World experience.
