Terry Reid Talks How He Put John Bonham In Led Zeppelin

  • by

The story of Led Zeppelin’s formation is etched in rock history. But what if there’s another chapter to this tale?

Terry Reid, a vocalist with a powerful voice and stage presence, famously declined the chance to be the band’s frontman. However, his influence might have extended far beyond the microphone stand.

In a recent interview with Backstage Pass, Reid steps back into the early days of Led Zeppelin, revealing a surprising role he may have played in securing a drumming powerhouse – the one and only John Bonham. Reid’s claim? He was the one who kept Bonham on the musical path that ultimately led him to thunder behind the legendary Led Zeppelin sound.

Terry Reid on the Chemistry of Led Zeppelin

Reid offers some unique insights into the early days of Led Zeppelin. He emphasizes the importance of band chemistry, highlighting the crucial role a drummer plays in solidifying a group’s sound.

According to Reid, he specifically advised Jimmy Page to focus on John Bonham, even when discussing the band’s vocalist: “Look, you get Robert singing… But for God’s sake do not not listen to the drummer John Bonham. John Bonham is going to be the anchor of the group. Whoever else is in it I don’t care.”

Reid further underscores Bonham’s talent, acknowledging the drummer’s raw power and embodying the very essence of what makes a great drummer: “I said to Jimmy, ‘He’s an animal… everything that we love about drummers.’”

The Road Not Taken by Terry Reid

Terry Reid’s story with Led Zeppelin is a fascinating one, marked by a pivotal “what if” moment.  Jimmy Page initially approached Reid to be the band’s vocalist, but Reid was already committed to another project and didn’t want to break his word.

However, his influence didn’t end there. He famously recommended Robert Plant for the frontman role, ultimately shaping the band’s future sound. While the decision to decline the offer seems to have been clear-cut for Reid, the reasons behind it remain somewhat shrouded.

In a 2016 interview, he downplayed any lingering regrets, simply stating, “It’s a waste of time to talk about it. They did really well. End of story.” While brief, his words highlight a respect for Led Zeppelin’s success and a focus on moving forward.
