Alan Parson Shares David Gilmour and Roger Waters’ Relationship Before Their Fight

  • by

Alan Parsons, the sonic architect behind Pink Floyd’s iconic sound, recently offered a rare glimpse into the dynamic between bandmates David Gilmour and Roger Waters. In a candid conversation with Rick Beato, Parsons painted a picture of a creative tension that would eventually erupt into one of rock’s most infamous feuds.

Parsons recalled a time when constructive criticism flowed freely between the two guitar titans. “They were all critical of each other’s performances and not afraid to say,” he shared. This candid exchange, while perhaps surprising to some, was a testament to the high standards they held for their craft.

As the story unfolds, it becomes evident that the seeds of their eventual rift might have been sown in these early days of mutual critique. Parsons’ insights offer a unique perspective, allowing us to peer behind the curtain of one of rock’s most enduring rivalries.

A Look Back at Pink Floyd’s Harmony

Parsons recently shed light on the band’s harmonious past. Contrary to the well-documented animosity between Roger Waters and David Gilmour, Parsons recalls a time of creative synergy and camaraderie. “They all got on really well. Making Dark Side was a joy,” he reminisced.

A far cry from their current state, the band members were once united by a shared passion for their craft. Parsons’s pivotal role in shaping the sound of Dark Side of the Moon is undeniable. His contributions earned him a Grammy nomination, solidifying his status as a musical luminary.

However, the demands of his burgeoning solo career with the Alan Parsons Project led him to decline the band’s invitation to work on their subsequent album, Wish You Were Here.

Turning Down Pink Floyd Was a Difficult Decision

Pink Floyd’s meteoric rise following The Dark Side of the Moon made the proposition incredibly enticing. However, Parsons had a clear vision for his solo career and ultimately made the difficult decision to decline.

Despite turning down this high-profile opportunity, Parsons’ career thrived. His talent as a producer and musician quickly propelled him to success. He scored a series of hits with artists like Pilot, Steve Harley, Cockney Rebel, and John Miles, even achieving multiple number-one singles in the UK.

This career trajectory demonstrates that Parsons’ choice to focus on his solo endeavors was a sound one. While working with Pink Floyd undoubtedly would have been a significant step forward, his independent path ultimately led to remarkable achievements.

Alan Parsons on His Relationships with the Former Bandmates

The legendary producer also recently shared insights into his relationships with the members of Pink Floyd. When asked about his closest connection within the group, Parsons revealed a recent disagreement with the the Waters. “I had a little bit of altercation with Roger Waters recently,” he explained, citing Waters’ opposition to Parsons’ performance in Tel Aviv, Israel.

In contrast to his experience with Waters, Parsons described a positive relationship with David Gilmour. “David Gilmour was always supportive,” he shared, highlighting Gilmour’s contribution to his solo album, A Valid Part. Parsons also mentioned a recent encounter with Nick Mason, who attended one of his masterclasses at Abbey Road Studios and is planning a visit to Parsons’ home in Santa Barbara.

Currently on tour in the United States, Parsons is set to perform in Denver, Colorado, on August 14. His tour will also include stops in Las Vegas, Phoenix, Tucson, and Milwaukee.
