Bob Dylan Gives Cover Of 1934 “Don’t Fence Me In” For Ronald Reagan Biopic

  • by

Bob Dylan, the legendary folk singer and songwriter, has added his unique voice to the soundtrack of a forthcoming Ronald Reagan biopic. Starring Dennis Quaid in the title role, the film will also feature music from Gene Simmons, Clint Black, and Tanya Tucker.

Dylan’s contribution to the project is a cover of Cole Porter’s classic 1934 song, “Don’t Fence Me In”. The tune, which has been popularized by artists like Bing Crosby and Gene Autry, seems like an unexpected choice for a Reagan biopic.

However, given Dylan’s own political activism and his penchant for surprising musical choices, it’s a fitting addition to the film’s soundtrack.

A Family Connection

Dennis Quaid, who plays Ronald Reagan in the upcoming biopic, expressed his excitement about Bob Dylan’s involvement in the project. “I was honored to have Bob join our film,” Quaid told Spin. “We gave him complete freedom to choose any song he wanted, and he selected ‘Don’t Fence Me In.’”

Quaid’s connection to the song goes beyond its popularity. Gene Autry, who famously sang the tune, is his third cousin. Having a song associated with Autry on the soundtrack holds a special significance for Quaid.

“Bob is a great admirer of the American Songbook, and we were thrilled with his rendition of the song,” Quaid added. “He’s a national icon and a perfect fit for our film.”

A Musical Tribute

The Bard isn’t the only legendary musician contributing to the Reagan biopic’s soundtrack. Gene Simmons of KISS has covered “Stormy Weather”, a classic song popularized by Ethel Waters and later by Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and countless others.

More contemporary music will also be featured. Clint Black is set to perform a cover of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads”, adding a touch of modern country to the film. While details about Tanya Tucker’s involvement remain unclear, her inclusion would further enhance the diverse musical landscape.

The film itself is scheduled to hit theaters on August 30, 2024. With a star-studded cast and a soundtrack featuring iconic musicians, Reagan promises to be a captivating cinematic experience.
