A Near-Dissolution in the Early Days

The notion of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel parting ways may not seem entirely unexpected given their history of intermittent breakups and well-documented creative clashes. However, what might surprise many fans is that their partnership nearly came to an end shortly after the release of their debut album.

The duo’s initial foray into the music scene was marked by a series of challenges and disagreements. Their contrasting personalities and artistic visions often led to friction, and the early days of their collaboration were far from harmonious. Despite these obstacles, they persevered, releasing their self-titled debut album in 1964.

While the album initially failed to make a significant impact, a sleeper hit track, “The Sound of Silence”, unexpectedly gained traction and propelled Simon & Garfunkel to newfound fame.

March 10th 1964, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel recorded ‘The Sounds Of Silence’ as an acoustic duo. It wasn’t until record company producers added electric guitar, bass and drums, without the knowledge of Paul and Art, that the song would become a hit in late 1965. pic.twitter.com/rAUl0P0lt8

A Commercial Flop and the Threat of Disbandment

After signing with Columbia Records in 1964, Simon & Garfunkel released their debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.” which unfortunately met with little commercial success. The album was overshadowed by the British Invasion, and its release seemed to pass unnoticed amidst the wave of popular British bands.

Disappointed by the album’s failure, Simon and Garfunkel began to contemplate the end of their partnership. Simon headed to London to focus on his solo career, while Garfunkel returned to New York to pursue his studies in architecture. It appeared that their journey together was drawing to a close.

However, fate had other plans. As Simon worked on his solo album, he penned a song that would ultimately change the trajectory of his career and the future of Simon & Garfunkel.
