What Was Steven Tyler’s Rare Injury?

  • by

Aerosmith’s incredible journey has spanned over five decades, transforming them from a Boston-based rock band to icons of classic rock. Their evolution from sleazy tracks to stadium-filling anthems is a testament to their lasting impact and success.

As the band geared up for their Peace Out farewell tour, excitement was palpable. The tour’s opening show in Philadelphia was met with enthusiastic reviews, offering fans a chance to enjoy their electrifying live performances one last time.

But the celebration was cut short. Steven Tyler, the band’s dynamic frontman, suffered a severe throat injury. This unexpected setback led to the postponement of several shows and cast a shadow over Aerosmith’s final tour.

Tyler’s Vocal Injury is Life-Threatening

On September 29, 2023, Tyler announced on Aerosmith’s social media that he was dealing with vocal cord damage. “I’m heartbroken to say I have received strict doctor’s orders not to sing for the next thirty days,” he wrote. The injury, sustained during a show, led to bleeding and forced the postponement of several dates.

Soon after, it was revealed that Tyler also had a broken larynx. This additional injury required further treatment and a longer recovery period. Consequently, all remaining 2023 shows were canceled and rescheduled for the next year.

A laryngeal fracture is rare and can be life-threatening if not properly managed. It can block the airway and inhibit vocalization, with a reported mortality rate of 17.9%, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Recovery and Rescheduled Tour

The Aerosmith frontman is on track for a full recovery from both his vocal cord damage and laryngeal fracture. By February 2024, he was seen at the Hollywood Palladium’s “Jam for Janie” Grammys party, sharing positive news about his recovery. He had previously updated fans on Facebook in November 2023.

The Peace Out tour is now set to resume, albeit a year later than planned. The band released a revised itinerary in April 2024, with new dates scheduled between September 2024 and February 2025. The tour will include stops in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

While Tyler is eager to hit the road for the rescheduled dates, one key member will be missing. Joey Kramer, Aerosmith’s original drummer, will not be joining the tour and will instead focus on his health and family.
