The 1970s were a golden age for rock, brimming with iconic bands and unforgettable hits. Yet, not every band from this vibrant era found the fame they deserved. Some groups dazzled with their talent but remained just under the radar.
These overlooked rock bands had the chops to compete with the legends of the decade. They may not have hit the big time, but their music holds up as a testament to their skill and creativity.
Join us as we explore these hidden gems from the 1970s, whose remarkable contributions to rock remain largely unsung.
1. April Wine
These rockers gained legendary status in their native Canada, though they didn’t reach the international fame of bands like Black Sabbath or Deep Purple. Initially led by the Henman brothers, they were later fronted by multi-instrumentalist Myles Goodwin.
April Wine did achieve some American success, notably with their 1972 release On Record and the 1978 album First Glance. Their 1981 hit “Just Between You and Me” remains their most famous song.
2. Dead Boys
The original lineup of The Dead Boys produced two standout albums: Young, Loud and Snotty in 1977 and We Have Come For Your Children in 1978. Though they were pivotal in the early American punk rock scene, they didn’t receive the same level of attention as The Stooges or The Ramones.
It’s a shame because “Sonic Reducer” has evolved into an anthem for U.S. punk fans and bands alike.
3. The Guess Who
Among 1970s rock bands that never hit it big, this one stands out. “American Woman,” released in 1970, is an incredibly memorable song, matched by the album of the same name.
Despite their impact, The Guess Who often fly under the radar in discussions about rock greats from that era. With a substantial amount of underrated material, it’s surprising they haven’t been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yet.
4. Nazareth
Nazareth, with over 20 records to their name, continues to rock strong today. The Scottish hard rock legends are best known for hits like “Love Hurts” and “Hair of the Dog” from 1975.
Despite their enduring presence and underrated singles, Nazareth doesn’t get the recognition they deserve. The band has been together for nearly 60 years, showcasing remarkable longevity and dedication.
5. The Sweet
Even if their music doesn’t ring a bell, their iconic haircuts might. The Sweet made a notable impact on the Billboard Hot 100 with Top 10 hits like “The Ballroom Blitz” from 1973 and “Fox On The Run” from 1975.
While The Sweet eventually transitioned from glam to hard rock, their music’s quality remained top-notch. Influential figures from bands like Guns N’ Roses and Duran Duran have cited The Sweet as a significant influence. It’s puzzling why they haven’t received more recognition—they truly deserve it.
