10 Rockstars You Didn’t Know Were Geniuses

  • by

Not all rockstars are just about loud guitars and wild antics. Behind the flashy performances, some have hidden intellectual prowess. It’s easy to focus on the drama of rock ‘n’ roll, but there’s more to these icons.

Some musicians are famous for bizarre behavior and scandalous exploits. Yet, others excel in areas far beyond music. Imagine a rock legend who’s also a genius in science or math.

In this article, we reveal rockstars who are not just musicians but also brilliant minds. Prepare to be amazed by their surprising intellectual achievements.

9. Tom Scholz, Boston

When you picture rock bands forming, you might imagine teens jamming in their parents’ basement. But Boston’s story is different. Their founder and lead guitarist, Tom Scholz, wasn’t just a typical rock dreamer.

While Boston was getting started, Scholz was earning a master’s in mathematical engineering from MIT. Yes, that MIT. He used his engineering skills to build a top-notch recording studio in his basement.

Boston’s debut album sold over 17 million copies. After the band’s success, Scholz even started a company creating devices for musicians. Does this make him a genius? It sure seems like it.

8. Brian May, Queen

Brian May’s achievements are truly remarkable. Not only is he one of the greatest rock guitarists ever, but he’s also a Commander of the British Empire. On top of that, he’s a respected astrophysicist.

While Queen was rising to fame in the early ’70s, May was working on his PhD at Imperial College. His research focused on reflected light from interplanetary dust and the velocity of dust in the solar system.

May put his studies on hold for Queen’s success but returned to complete his thesis in 2007. Today, he’s known as Dr. Brian May, showcasing his genius both on and off the stage.

7. Greg Graffin, Bad Religion

Imagine the most logical side gig for the founder and lead singer of a punk rock band. Evolutionary biologist might not be the first answer that comes to mind, but it fits Greg Graffin perfectly.

While fronting Bad Religion and writing impactful songs, Graffin earned a PhD in zoology from Cornell. He also teaches at Cornell and UCLA, balancing his music career with academia.

Recently, an extinct bird species from the Cretaceous period was named after him. This honor recognized his contributions to evolutionary biology and his influence through music. It’s a testament to Graffin’s remarkable genius.

6. Annie Lennox, The Eurythmics

This list highlights musicians whose talents extend beyond music, but Annie Lennox stands out for a different reason. Known for her work with The Eurythmics, Lennox’s genius is most evident in her exceptional musical skill.

A prodigy from a young age, Lennox was accepted into the Royal Academy of Music in London as a teenager. There, she studied the flute, piano, and harpsichord, receiving one of the finest musical educations available.

Although the flute alone might not pay the bills, Lennox transitioned to pop music and rode the New Wave wave to global fame. Her musical prowess and success are a testament to her undeniable genius.

5. Sterling Morrison, The Velvet Underground

When you think of The Velvet Underground, names like Lou Reed and Nico come to mind. But don’t overlook guitarist Sterling Morrison. He wasn’t just a musician; he was also a talented songwriter.

After The Velvet Underground disbanded, Morrison pursued an academic career. He earned a Ph.D. in medieval literature from the University of Texas in 1986.

Given his band’s dark image and songs like “Venus in Furs,” it might seem fitting that Morrison chose to study medieval lit. His transition from rock to academia is a fascinating twist in his story.

It might seem surprising, but “Weird Al” Yankovic definitely deserves a spot here. Known for parodies like “Eat It” and “Another One Rides the Bus,” he has won five Grammys and sold over 12 million albums.

Yankovic started playing the accordion at age seven after his parents chose it over guitar lessons from a traveling salesman. This early start was just the beginning of his unique path.

Academically, Yankovic excelled as well. He was a year ahead in kindergarten, skipped second grade, and graduated high school at 16 as valedictorian. His blend of musical and intellectual achievements makes him a true genius.

From an early age, Kramer showed a knack for science, winning a science fair at 12 with a laser that could pop a balloon. He later earned a degree in aerospace engineering and worked on the MX missile guidance system for the Department of Defense.

Kramer’s contributions didn’t stop there. He worked on fractal compression and facial recognition systems in the computer industry. In 1990, he co-founded a company with Randy Jackson, focusing on data compression for CD-ROMs. His diverse achievements highlight his genius.

In the 80s, punk rock seemed to attract a surprising number of geniuses. Milo Aukerman of The Descendants is a prime example.

Aukerman juggled his time between leading the pioneering pop punk band and pursuing a career in biochemical engineering. He left the band in 1982 after their debut album, Milo Goes to College, to focus on his studies.

He earned a PhD in biology and worked as a researcher for DuPont. His ability to excel in both music and science certainly marks him as a genius.

Jeff “Skunk” Baxter is renowned for his rockstar status with Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers. But his talents extend far beyond music.

In the mid-1980s, Baxter’s interest in missile defense was piqued by a subscription to Aviation Week from a neighbor. This led him to become a consultant for the Department of Defense and other U.S. security organizations.

Baxter’s expertise even took him to the Civilian Advisory Board for Ballistic Missile Defense. His transition from rock guitar to defense consulting showcases his remarkable range of skills.
