Watch Mark Knopfler Make Brian Johnson Almost Cry When He Plays “Matchstick Man”

  • by

Music has a way of striking a chord deep in our emotions, and sometimes it’s impossible to hold back the tears. That’s exactly what happened when Mark Knopfler performed “Matchstick Man” for Brian Johnson during an episode of On The Road. The intimate moment was as heartfelt as it was unforgettable.

Knopfler’s stirring rendition of the song, which concluded his 2018 album Down the Road Wherever, was a masterclass in musical storytelling. For Johnson, a fellow Geordie, it wasn’t just a performance—it was a deeply personal connection.

His reaction spoke volumes, as he confessed, “That touched me big time, that did.” It’s rare to witness such raw vulnerability between two rock legends. This meeting of musical minds was more than an interview.

A Musical Journey Through Northumberland

In 2019, Knopfler gave Johnson an unforgettable tour of Northumberland while sharing stories of his early musical career. Their time together, captured on AXS TV’s A Life on the Road, offered fans a glimpse into Knopfler’s formative years as a musician.

In one candid moment, Knopfler described how he started in a band called Brewers Droop after answering an ad in Melody Maker. A gig on Christmas Eve in Penzance inspired him to write a song that captured the life-changing realization of his path in music.

Reflecting on that pivotal experience, Knopfler recounted the moment with humor and heart. Brian’s playful response, “You could have said I was juiced up, no?” added a lighthearted touch to an otherwise introspective story.

I just finished “Brian Johnson’s A Life On The Road” featuring Mark Knopfler. I must say it was fantastic! But Mark was nothing like I thought I knew. He’s not dark, aloof or bitter. He was incredibly deep and celebratory and proud of his roots & home. A purveyor of his story. pic.twitter.com/JcQFD3rVvk

The Heartfelt Story Behind “Matchstick Man”

Mark brought the raw emotion of “Matchstick Man” to life with a heartfelt performance. The lyrics vividly capture a young musician’s struggles, from a Christmas Eve gig in Penzance to hitchhiking home through the snow to Geordieland. It’s a story that resonates deeply with anyone who has ever pursued a dream against the odds.

As Knopfler sang the poignant lines, Brian was visibly moved. The imagery of a vagabond with “500 miles to go” struck a chord with the AC/DC frontman, who responded, “Oh, that’s touching, I was with you.” It was a rare moment of shared vulnerability between two legends.

Knopfler reflected on the song’s meaning, noting how it encapsulates the life-altering choice to follow music. In his words, “there’s just that real feeling of what you’ve chosen to do with your life.” It’s a sentiment that lingers long after the final note.
