John Lennon Was So Sick Of A Christmas Song He Wrote A New One

  • by

Christmas music has a way of sticking in your head—sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. For John Lennon, one holiday classic had worn out its welcome. Tired of hearing “White Christmas” everywhere, he decided to take matters into his own hands.

Instead of complaining, Lennon created his own festive anthem. The result? A timeless Christmas hit that continues to bring joy every holiday season. But this wasn’t just a solo effort—it involved a surprising connection to the very song he was tired of hearing.

Lennon also drew inspiration from an unexpected source: a track with no ties to Christmas at all. This creative mix of frustration and innovation gave the world a holiday tune unlike any other.

Lennon Wanted an ‘Updated’ Christmas Song

John Lennon penned “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” during a pivotal time in his career. Preparing to return to touring after a seven-year break, he expressed both excitement and frustration. “I’ve got a lot to learn,” he admitted, referencing the challenge of getting his band back into shape.

The inspiration for the song came from Lennon’s weariness of the overplayed “White Christmas,” written by Irving Berlin. While the Bing Crosby classic had become a holiday staple, Lennon sought to create a fresh take on Christmas music with a message that resonated beyond the season.

Interestingly, Lennon drew from another track for his creation. He acknowledged that the opening of his song resembled The Paris Sisters’ “I Love How You Love Me.” While he enjoyed quoting older tunes, he noted the risks of copyright disputes, calling them “a drag.”

Phil Spector’s Ironic Role in the Christmas Classic

The legendary Phil Spector produced John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas (War Is Over),” adding his signature touch to the iconic track. Known for crafting hits for girl groups, Spector’s influence on popular music was undeniable.

Spector also created the holiday album A Christmas Gift to You from Phil Spector. This record included Darlene Love’s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” and beloved covers like The Ronettes’ “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” and The Crystals’ “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.” These songs remain holiday radio staples.

What’s ironic is Lennon’s choice to collaborate with Spector. Given that Spector’s album also featured a cover of “White Christmas,” the very song Lennon hoped to surpass, the partnership added an unexpected twist to the story behind his Christmas anthem.

At a 1973 session for John Lennon’s Rock ‘n’ Roll album, producer Phil Spector, high on amyl nitrate, shot a gun in the studio lounge inches from Lennon’s ear.

An enraged Lennon yelled, ‘If you’re going to shoot me, shoot me. But don’t fuck with my ears. I need them.’ pic.twitter.com/Ktj3VZNGyu

Spector’s Festive Touch on “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”

Phil Spector had already made his mark with The Beatles, producing their Let It Be album and later working on John Lennon’s Imagine and George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. While collaborating on “Happy Xmas (War Is Over),” Lennon jokingly told Spector to pretend it was Christmas. When Spector replied that he was Jewish, Lennon quipped, “Then pretend it’s your birthday.”

Spector brought his expertise in crafting holiday hits to the table. He insisted that a key element of Christmas music should be included in the song. “How can you make a song called ‘Happy Xmas’ without bells?” he asked, emphasizing their importance.

With a history of creating iconic Christmas records, Spector’s input was invaluable. His signature touch helped shape the track into a holiday anthem, blending his traditional techniques with Lennon’s unique vision.

On December 1, 1971 “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” by John & Yoko/Plastic Ono Band with the Harlem Community Choir is released. It was the seventh single release by John Lennon outside his work with the Beatles. The song reached No. 42 in the US and was produced by Phil Spector. pic.twitter.com/RsiMT4iCj6

Comparing “White Christmas” and “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”

Both “White Christmas” and “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” have become beloved holiday hits. However, their chart success tells a different story. Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the chart for an impressive 35 weeks.

On the other hand, John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” peaked at No. 38 and remained on the chart for only six weeks. Despite this, the song has endured over the years as a holiday classic.

No matter which song you favor, both are essential to the holiday season. They’ve each earned their place in the soundtrack of the most wonderful time of the year.
