Tragic Incident Near Roosevelt Mall

Philadelphia, PA — January 31, 2025

A tragic plane crash in Northeast Philadelphia has claimed the lives of seven individuals, including a young patient and her mother, along with medical personnel and crew members. The Learjet 55 air ambulance, operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, went down shortly after takeoff from Northeast Philadelphia Airport, igniting a massive explosion near Roosevelt Mall.

The aircraft was en route to Mexico, transporting a young girl who had recently undergone critical life-saving treatment in the United States. Onboard were the patient, her mother, a doctor, a paramedic, the pilot, and the co-pilot. Tragically, none of the six passengers survived the crash.

Devastation and Emergency Response

Witnesses described a harrowing scene as the plane lost altitude and crashed into a residential area, causing extensive damage to homes and vehicles. A massive explosion ensued, setting nearby structures ablaze. Emergency services arrived swiftly, working tirelessly to control the fires and assist the injured.

Authorities confirmed that one person on the ground also lost their life, and at least 19 others sustained injuries, some suffering from severe burns. Several families were forced to evacuate their homes as flames threatened the surrounding neighborhood.

“The explosion was like nothing I’ve ever seen,” said a resident who witnessed the crash. “It shook the entire block, and within seconds, smoke filled the air.”

Investigation Underway

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched a joint investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft vanished from radar roughly 30 seconds after takeoff. While weather conditions included light rain and fog, investigators have not yet determined whether these factors played a role.

Philadelphia Mayor James Kenney expressed condolences to the victims’ families and praised the bravery of first responders. “This is a heartbreaking tragedy for our community,” Kenney stated. “We are doing everything we can to support those affected and investigate the circumstances surrounding this devastating incident.”

The crash marks the second fatal aviation disaster in the U.S. within just a few days, raising concerns about air safety. Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, known for its international medical evacuation services, has pledged full cooperation with investigators.

As the investigation unfolds, the Philadelphia community continues to rally around the affected families, offering support and assistance during this dark time. Memorial services for the victims are being planned, with many expressing gratitude for the dedication of the medical team who perished in the line of duty.
