US Fighter Jet Goes Down On San Diego Bay

  • by

Just before the February 12 crash into San Diego Bay, two U.S. Navy pilots were ejected from their EA-18G Growler and are now safe. Both pilots were rescued from the water and sent to a hospital, where their conditions were stable, thanks to the prompt actions of rescuers.

Crash Landing in Low Visibility

Around 10:15 a.m., the incident happened. The aircraft was assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 135 and attempted to land at Naval Base Coronado due to inclement weather. The pilots of their aircraft were able to escape in time and land in the bay after their jet crashed and sank underwater.

A nearby fishing boat from H&M Landing witnessed the dramatic scene and immediately turned around to help. “As all of our crews are trained in lifesaving efforts, they immediately came about, turned around, and picked up both pilots,” said company general manager Frank Ursitti. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection vessel then transported the pilots to shore, where emergency teams took over.

Cleanup and Safety Precautions

The wreckage remains underwater as response teams work to secure the area. Harbor Security boats were present and to stop gasoline and debris from spreading, a containment boom was erected around the crash site. The public has received assurances from the Navy that there have been no reports of civilian damage or injuries.

People are being advised by officials to avoid any possible airplane debris that might wash up on the shore. The Navy issued a warning, saying, “Do not approach, touch, or collect any debris.” Anyone who sees wreckage should notify Naval Base Coronado or local authorities.

Investigation Underway

The Emergency Operations Center at Naval Base Coronado is still operational, and the cause of the crash is currently being investigated. Based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington, the EA-18G Growler is renowned for its sophisticated electronic warfare capabilities.

The pilots’ safety and the crash’s effects on the environment are still the key concerns. As authorities try to piece together what caused the emergency landing, more updates are anticipated.
