Matt Sorum Sheds Light On Steven Tyler’s Touring Plans

  • by

Steven Tyler made a surprising return to the stage on February 2, marking his first live performance since Aerosmith’s touring retirement in 2024. The legendary frontman had stepped back due to ongoing vocal issues, leaving fans wondering if he’d ever sing live again. His comeback took place at the 2025 Janie’s Fund Grammy Viewing Party benefit, a cause close to his heart.

Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and former Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum joined him for the performance. These musicians had a front-row seat to Tyler’s current vocal condition and the challenges he faces. Their involvement made the moment even more significant, offering insight into what the future might hold for the rock icon.

While Tyler’s appearance sparked excitement, it also raised questions about his long-term touring plans. Matt Sorum, having witnessed the performance up close, has shared his perspective on whether the singer is ready to hit the road again. His thoughts provide a clearer picture of what fans can expect from Tyler moving forward.

A Look at Steven Tyler’s “Jam for Janie” Performance

At the “Jam for Janie” event, Steven Tyler took the stage and performed four classic Aerosmith hits along with two covers. His performance was supported by an impressive band lineup, including Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme and Matt Sorum, the former Guns N’ Roses drummer. The night also featured guest appearances from Lainie Wilson, Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes, Aerosmith’s Tom Hamilton, and Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac.

Tyler’s performance sparked hope among Aerosmith fans that he might return to touring. The energy of the event had many speculating that the iconic singer could hit the road once more. However, Matt Sorum, who served as the musical director for the event, offered a different perspective.

In a recent interview with WBAB, Sorum shared his thoughts on Tyler’s future in touring. Despite the excitement surrounding the performance, Sorum doesn’t believe Tyler will be able to return to the road, casting doubt on the possibility of a full tour anytime soon.

Matt Explains Why Steven Tyler Won’t Tour Again

Matt Sorum, a close friend of Steven Tyler, opened up about the challenges the Aerosmith frontman faces. Speaking to WBAB’s Joe Rock, Sorum explained that Tyler’s recent performance at the Janie’s Fund benefit was a significant moment for him. However, Sorum firmly stated that Tyler won’t be touring again, highlighting the intense pressure of a full worldwide tour.

At 77 years old, Tyler’s perfectionist nature makes the idea of touring even more difficult. Sorum pointed out that if Tyler can’t perform at his best, it deeply affects him. For a singer of his caliber, the rigors of a global tour just aren’t feasible anymore.

Sorum also mentioned that Tyler wouldn’t want to be recorded if his voice isn’t in top form. Additionally, Tyler isn’t the type to change the keys of Aerosmith’s iconic songs to accommodate his voice, further reinforcing why a full tour is unlikely.

Steven Tyler’s Reluctance to Perform Without Perfection

Sorum expressed admiration for Steven Tyler’s approach to performing. He respects how Tyler refuses to take the stage unless he can meet his high standards. As Sorum explained, Tyler’s philosophy is clear: “If I can’t do it perfect, I can’t do it.”

Tyler, who has spent over 50 years with Aerosmith, sees himself as an artist first and foremost. Sorum shared that Tyler views his ability to perform at a top level as essential to his identity. If he can’t achieve that, he won’t perform at all.

However, Sorum did mention that Tyler might be open to more limited performances, similar to his appearance at the Janie’s Fund benefit. After discussing it with Tyler, Sorum noted that Tyler could be willing to sing a few songs at smaller events. Though it would still be a lot of pressure, Tyler might consider it again in the future.

“Jam for Janie” Highlights a Star-Studded Benefit

The Janie’s Fund Grammy Viewing Party took place at the Hollywood Palladium, featuring a standout performance by Kings of Chaos. This all-star band, led by Matt Sorum, showcased a rotating lineup of talented musicians and singers. Before Steven Tyler hit the stage, the audience enjoyed sets from Linda Perry, Marcus King, Billy Idol, and Joan Jett.

Tyler took the spotlight to perform several classics, including Extreme’s “More Than Words” and Aerosmith’s “Toys in the Attic” with Nuno Bettencourt. Later, Lainie Wilson joined him for the emotional “Dream On.” The evening continued with Chris Robinson singing Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” and Aerosmith’s iconic “Sweet Emotion.” The finale featured an all-star rendition of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way,” with everyone joining Tyler onstage.

The event raised funds for Janie’s Fund, a charity Tyler co-founded to support girls and young women who have faced abuse and neglect. This year, in light of the recent Southern California wildfires, proceeds also went to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation and the Widows, Orphans, and Disabled Firefighter’s Fund.

Matt Sorum Reflects on Organizing the 2025 “Jam for Janie”

In the interview, Matt Sorum shared that Steven Tyler personally asked him to organize the 2025 “Jam for Janie” event. Tyler reached out to Sorum, saying, “Matt, can you help me?” to which Sorum quickly agreed. He then took charge of putting everything together for the star-studded benefit.

Sorum expressed his honor at being chosen for such an important task. He described Tyler as an “iconic guy” and reflected on the unique collaboration. As someone who has spent his life in bands, Tyler sought out a trusted bandmate, and Sorum was humbled to be the one Tyler turned to.

For two months leading up to the event, Sorum and Tyler were in constant communication, discussing every detail. The connection and collaboration between the two made the event even more meaningful for Sorum, who was thrilled to help bring the show to life.

Aerosmith’s Farewell Tour Ends Due to Vocal Injury

In September 2023, Aerosmith was forced to postpone their Peace Out farewell tour after Steven Tyler sustained a serious vocal cord injury. The band had already started the tour, performing just three shows before Tyler’s condition caused a halt. Initially, they rescheduled several dates in hopes of continuing.

However, on August 2, 2024, Aerosmith made the decision to officially cancel all remaining shows for the tour. The announcement revealed that Tyler’s vocal injury was severe enough that “a full recovery … is not possible.” This marked the end of their long-awaited farewell tour.

Tyler’s performance at the 2025 “Jam for Janie” event was his first major live appearance since the band’s final concert in September 2023. Although Tyler joined The Black Crowes in May 2024 to perform “Mama Kin” in London, this was a more intimate performance compared to the high-profile benefit.

It was 1970 when a spark of inspiration became Aerosmith. Thanks to you, our Blue Army, that spark caught flame and has been burning for over five decades. Some of you have been with us since the beginning and all of you are the reason we made rock ‘n’ roll history.
